Dutch silver cruet set with a pepper caster
Hendrik Swierinck
Amsterdam, 1759
883 grams all in, 729 grams and 154 grams, 26 cm high including caster
Fully marked on the reverse of the frame and struck with the 1795 control mark for Amsterdam, the caster struck with the maker’s mark on the body engraved at the neck with the weight and struck with the 1795 control mark for Amsterdam.
The reverse of the frame displays the inscription of the date 7 Februarij Ao 1759. Above it are traces of a long text, which was erased in the past and therefore illegible. An engraved text with date usually indicates that the object was intended as a gift for a special occasion, in Dutch a so-called pillegift.
