Dutch silver sweetmeat basket
Johan Christoffel Ouwenhage
88 grams, 14,2 cm x 9 cm x 5.3 cm
According to the inscription this sweetmeat basket must have been a gift on the occasion of the christening of Crina Cornelia Peman in 1776. Her granddaughter, who was named after her, inherited the basket after her grandfather had died in 1863.
Johan Christoffel Ouwenhage, maker’s mark ICO below a swan, is known to have made baskets, tobacco jars and braziers, candlesticks and cutlery. A brazier by this master is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
