17th century Dutch silver beaker
Unidentified master, Zwolle, 1653 or 1677
106 grams; 11 cm high
On the imitation of the shagreen ground three ovals are engraved. Two of them displaying flowers, a tulip and a daffodil, the other engraved with monograms IGH and PPB above a candlestick, surrounded by palm leaves in shield form. Fully marked on the reverse and inscribed with 8 Lot min 1⁄2 E.
The maker’s mark, a bird in a shield, has not been attributed to a Zwolle master yet. The inscription 8 Lot min 1⁄2 E indicates the weight of the beaker.
Two similar beakers, dated 1670 and made by the Zwolle silversmith Gerrit Schuurman, are depicted in Glans langs de IJssel. He was active between ca. 1659 and 1676 in Zwolle.
This type of beaker, also called ice beaker, originates in Germany.
